Pilates And A Healthy Spine

Everyone has read at least one article regarding the benefits of a healthy spine. A healthy spine has become a popular topic for good reason. Research has shown that 80 percent of the active American population suffers from low back pain at some point in their life.

It is obvious to most people that back health is important, but why does it matter? A healthy spine reduces pain, but it can also increase your immune system and improve your critical thinking and quality of sleep. A healthy spine can decrease your level of stress, prevent future injuries, and even reduce your health care costs. These are all important considerations to your quality of life and financial health.

Pilates and Pilates exercises have long been associated with reducing back, joint, and muscle pain. Pilates is an exercise program that focuses on the core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced, strong, and flexible. Core muscles are essential to providing support for the spine. In Pilates group classes, we teach students to be awareness of good posture, proper alignment of the spine, and strengthening the core muscles that support this alignment. These are important to help alleviate and prevent back, joint, and muscle pain.

Pilates also teaches awareness of movement habits that may strain the back and other joints. Pilates helps you change these habits and understand how to use the body correctly and efficiently. Pilates is suitable and adaptable for all populations. Pilates can improve your postural alignment and increase your body awareness, while simultaneously developing and deepening your strength and flexibility.
